Connecticut Employee Leave Guide

Connecticut FMLA and Paid Leave Guidance

Connecticut employees may deal with federal FMLA, Connecticut FMLA, CT Paid Leave, CT Paid Sick Leave, employer policies, PTO, and disability benefits. Connecticut is important because paid leave benefits and job-protected leave are related, but they are not the same thing.

Leave Programs That May Matter in Connecticut

Federal FMLA

May provide unpaid, job-protected leave for eligible employees of covered employers.

Connecticut FMLA

CT FMLA may provide unpaid, job-protected leave for eligible employees for qualifying family or medical reasons.

CT Paid Leave

CT Paid Leave provides income replacement benefits for covered workers, but CT Paid Leave does not provide job protection by itself.

CT Paid Sick Leave

Connecticut paid sick leave provides eligible employees paid sick time, with expanded employer coverage being phased in through 2027.

Employer Policies

Employer PTO, STD, private plans, and internal leave rules may still matter for pay and coordination.

Common Employee Confusion

What to Check Before You Act

Important Reminder

FMLA, state leave, disability benefits, PTO and employer policies are separate systems. A benefit may pay wages without protecting the job, and a job-protected leave may be unpaid.

The safest move is to document your request in writing, keep copies of employer responses, and confirm which leave or benefit program is being used.
